Part 1: Answer Capsules: The Content Trait LLMs Cite Most

This post is Part 1 of four in a series about getting cited by AI search engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

A new study of 15 domains generating nearly 2 million organic sessions found that one content trait appears in 72.4% of blog posts cited by ChatGPT. It is not backlinks. It is not domain authority. It is a formatting pattern called an "answer capsule."

What is an answer capsule? A self-contained explanation of 120-150 characters placed immediately after a heading. It directly answers the question the heading implies — no links, no qualifiers, no "click here to learn more."

That blockquote you just read is an answer capsule. This entire post uses them. We are applying the research as we explain it.

The findings come from Adam Gnuse's research published on Search Engine Land, based on a manual audit of pages receiving 7,500 direct referral sessions from ChatGPT across industries including ecommerce, cybersecurity, healthcare, and education. What follows is our analysis of what these findings mean for SEO practitioners and for the emerging field of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

Quick Navigation

What the Research Found

The study identified three structural traits most strongly correlated with ChatGPT citations.

Answer capsules appeared in 72.4% of cited blog posts. These are compact, self-contained sentences placed directly after headings that frame a response to a question-based query.

Link-free capsules were the norm. Over 91% of cited answer capsules contained no internal or external links. The research suggests that links inside a capsule "imply the most authoritative answer lies on a different webpage," which reduces the capsule's quotability.

Original data appeared in 52.2% of cited posts. This includes unique surveys, proprietary benchmarks, and branded insights. The strongest configuration — answer capsules combined with proprietary data — appeared in 34.3% of cited posts.

These are not opinions. These are patterns measured across 15 real domains with measurable ChatGPT referral traffic.

Why Answer Capsules Work for LLMs

LLMs generate answers by selecting and recombining passages from their training data and retrieved sources. A capsule gives the model exactly what it needs: a complete, quotable answer in one place.

Think about how a language model processes your page. It does not read top-to-bottom like a human scanning for the interesting parts. It identifies passages that directly answer a query with minimal additional context required. A 120-150 character capsule that fully answers a question is easier to extract and cite than a paragraph where the answer is buried in the third sentence after two qualifying clauses.

This is the same reason that well-structured content gets cited more often in AI search results. The format does as much work as the information itself.

Over 91% of cited answer capsules contained no links. This is the finding that should change how you write.

The conventional SEO instinct is to link early and often. Internal links distribute authority. External links signal credibility. Both are still valuable — but not inside the capsule itself.

Why? Because a link inside an answer capsule tells the LLM: "The real answer is somewhere else." The capsule stops being self-contained. It becomes a pointer instead of a destination.

The fix is simple. Write your capsule as a complete, standalone answer. Then place your internal and external links in the supporting paragraphs below it. The links still exist. They still pass value. They just do not interrupt the quotable passage.

This does not contradict standard internal linking best practices. It refines them. Your links go in the explanation, not in the answer.

Original Data Makes Capsules Stronger

Having original data in your content increased the citation rate. The study found that 52.2% of cited posts featured original data or branded insights.

Original data does not mean you need to run formal surveys. It means presenting information that only you can provide. Your own benchmarks. Your own test results. Your own measured outcomes.

We did this in our AI model evaluation post, where we published the actual cost, speed, and accuracy results from testing 10 AI models in our production application. That is proprietary data. No other site has those exact numbers because no other site ran those exact tests.

Even reframing well-known information through your own experience counts as an "owned insight." The key is that the reader cannot find the exact same statement on five other websites.

The strongest combination was answer capsules plus original data — present in 34.3% of cited posts. If you have proprietary data, put it in a capsule.

What This Means for Traditional SEO

Answer capsules improve traditional search performance by increasing eligibility for Google's featured snippets and improving user dwell time.

Google's featured snippets work on a similar principle: they extract concise, direct answers from pages. A page with clear answer capsules after each H2 is more likely to win a featured snippet for the question that heading implies. This is the same structural logic behind writing title tags that earn clicks — clarity and directness outperform clever wordplay.

Answer capsules also improve dwell time. When a reader sees an immediate, useful answer after clicking through from search results, they stay longer. They read the supporting paragraphs because the capsule earned their trust. This is the opposite of "burying the lead," which causes readers to bounce back to Google.

For small business owners who already have limited content budgets, this is encouraging. You do not need more content. You need better-structured content. A site with 20 well-structured posts using answer capsules can outperform a site with 200 rambling ones — both in traditional search and in AI citations.

What This Means for GEO

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so that AI systems cite it. The Brass-SEO team analyzed this research and identified answer capsules as the field's first data-backed formatting recommendation.

Before this study, GEO advice was mostly intuitive: write clearly, be authoritative, structure your content well. Those are useful principles, but they are vague. "Add answer capsules of 120-150 characters after your H2 headings" is specific and actionable.

The research also clarifies what does not matter as much as people assumed. Domain authority, while still relevant for traditional rankings, is less decisive for AI citations. The study found that pages from smaller domains with well-structured capsules received citations alongside pages from major publications. This aligns with what we have observed — AI search results draw from a different set of signals than Google's traditional ranking algorithm.

For businesses investing in GEO, the recommendation is clear: audit your existing content for capsule opportunities before creating new content. The structural change to existing posts may deliver faster results than publishing new material.

How to Add Answer Capsules to Your Content

Adding answer capsules to existing content takes about 10 minutes per post.

Step 1: Identify your H2 headings. Each H2 should imply a question. "How to Fix Redirect Chains" implies "What is a redirect chain and how do I fix it?"

Step 2: Write a capsule. After each H2, add one sentence of 120-150 characters that directly answers the implied question. No links. No qualifiers. Just the answer.

Step 3: Move links below. If you currently have links in your opening sentence after a heading, move them to the second or third paragraph. The capsule stays clean.

Step 4: Add your own data where possible. If you have test results, measurements, or unique insights, work them into the capsule or the paragraph immediately following it.

Step 5: Check with your SEO data. Use your Google Search Console data to identify which posts have high impressions but low clicks. Those are your best candidates for capsule upgrades — the content is already relevant, it just needs better structure.

We Are Using This Research Right Now

Every section of this Brass-SEO post follows the answer capsule pattern. After each H2, the first sentence or two directly answers the question the heading implies. The links appear in supporting paragraphs, not in the capsules. And we are citing original research with specific numbers rather than making general claims.

This is not a coincidence. We read the research, recognized it as actionable, and applied it immediately. If the technique works — if LLMs are more likely to cite content structured this way — then this post should demonstrate that over time.

We will track whether this post receives AI referral traffic and report back. That would be original data built on cited research, which the study identified as the strongest combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an answer capsule?

An answer capsule is a self-contained sentence of 120-150 characters placed immediately after a heading. It directly answers the question the heading implies without requiring additional context, links, or qualifiers.

How long should an answer capsule be?

The research found the most-cited capsules were 120-150 characters. That is roughly one to two sentences. Long enough to be a complete answer, short enough to be easily quoted by an LLM.

Do answer capsules help with Google rankings too?

Yes. The same structural clarity that makes capsules quotable by LLMs also makes them eligible for Google's featured snippets. Both systems reward concise, direct answers placed prominently on the page.

No. The research says to keep links out of the answer capsule — the first sentence or two after a heading. Links in supporting paragraphs below the capsule are fine and still valuable for internal linking and user navigation.

What counts as "original data"?

Any information unique to your business: your own test results, benchmarks, case studies, pricing comparisons, or survey findings. Even framing common knowledge through your specific experience counts as a branded insight.

How many posts should I update first?

Start with your top 10-20 posts by impressions. These are already ranking for relevant queries — adding capsules gives them the best chance of being picked up by AI systems as well.
