The problem: This 98% figure lacks source attribution and doesn't reflect real-world performance. BrassTranscripts spent three weeks researching the claim through OpenAI's official documentation, four peer-reviewed academic studies (Interspeech 2023 and 2025, JASA, Frontiers in Communication), and five independent benchmarks (MLCommons, Deepgram, AssemblyAI, Soniox, Modal).

What the research found: The highest documented Whisper accuracy is 97.3% on LibriSpeech clean — a studio-quality audiobook dataset. The 98% figure appears to originate from MLPerf's 97.93% benchmark, rounded up and applied universally. Real-world Whisper performance ranges from 50% to 93% depending on audio quality, speaker accents, background noise, and recording conditions.

What they built: A 3,000-word investigative post — "The 98% Accuracy Claim: An Investigation into AI Transcription Performance" — published November 3, 2025 at brasstranscripts.com/blog/ai-transcription-accuracy-claims-investigation. The post cites all nine sources with direct links.

The correction submitted: BrassTranscripts highlighted the incorrect claim on Grokipedia, selected "It's Wrong," and submitted this correction text:

"This accuracy claim lacks authoritative source attribution. OpenAI's official Whisper documentation reports 97.3% accuracy on the LibriSpeech clean test set (studio-quality read speech). Peer-reviewed research shows Whisper's real-world accuracy ranges from 50–93% depending on audio quality, speaker accent, and recording conditions."

They also identified a second opportunity on the Whisper speech recognition page — vague language claiming "improved recognition of accents, background noise and jargon compared to previous approaches" without any quantification — and submitted an enhancement with specific benchmark data.


What Happened to Grokipedia

The honest update: Grokipedia's organic search traffic collapsed in February 2026. The site had grown rapidly to over 3.2 million monthly Google clicks by January 2026, then dropped to near-zero. Reported causes include unsourced material, misleading claims, and content that contradicted scientific consensus.

That collapse has two implications for the strategy:

The backlink value is uncertain. A link from a page that gets no traffic has limited referral value, and a site with credibility issues may carry less authority signal than it once did. Anyone executing this strategy now should treat the backlink as secondary — not the primary goal.

The platform still exists and could recover. Grokipedia's content is served from X's infrastructure, and AI-powered knowledge bases are not going away. The correction strategy may become more valuable as the platform addresses its content quality issues.
