Squarespace SEO: Working Around the Limits
Squarespace stores rank fine for branded queries. They struggle for competitive non-branded queries. The gap isn't accidental.

Where Squarespace Holds Its Own
Squarespace handles a baseline of SEO well. Automatic XML sitemap generation. Per-page title and meta description editing. Canonical URLs on every page. HTTPS by default. Mobile-responsive templates. Brass-SEO's audits rarely find issues in these baseline areas.
The platform also handles structured data partially. Product schema appears on commerce pages. Article schema appears on blog posts. Both are present, both have gaps, and both are limited in what the user can customize without editing template code.
Where Squarespace lands well in audits: brand-name queries, location-specific queries, and visually-driven verticals (photography, restaurants, portfolios). Where it lands poorly: high-competition informational queries and any keyword where competitors are running schema-rich, fast-loading, well-structured pages.
Limit 1: URL Structure for Blog Posts
Squarespace's default blog URL structure includes a category prefix that you can't fully remove without losing organization. A blog post in the "guides" category gets a URL like /guides/2026/05/post-slug rather than /post-slug. The date and category segments add length and can dilute keyword relevance.
The workaround: use the URL slug field on each blog post to override the auto-generated slug, but you can't remove the category/date prefix without restructuring how blog posts are organized in the admin. For sites publishing 50+ posts, the workaround becomes maintenance overhead.
The deeper issue: when you change a blog post's category or move it between collections, Squarespace updates the URL and creates a redirect from the old URL to the new. The redirect is correct behavior. The cascade of redirects across years of content reorganization gets messy.

Limit 2: Schema Markup Coverage
Squarespace includes some schema by default (Article on blog posts, Product on commerce items, LocalBusiness when the contact block is configured). What's missing or hard to add:
- FAQ schema — no native UI for adding FAQ structured data to a regular page. Workaround requires code injection via the page header editor.
- HowTo schema — same limitation. No native UI.
- BreadcrumbList schema — automatic on some templates, missing on others. Hard to add manually.

Limit 4: Bulk Metadata Editing
Squarespace's admin edits one page at a time. Adding meta descriptions to 50 blog posts means opening 50 pages, scrolling to the SEO section, typing the description, saving, closing. There's no spreadsheet upload, no bulk editor, no API workflow for non-developers.
For new sites publishing slowly, the per-page workflow is fine. For existing sites with hundreds of pages needing metadata cleanup, it's a real time cost.
The workarounds are limited. Squarespace's API supports some metadata fields but requires development work to use. Third-party tools that integrate with Squarespace are sparse compared to WordPress or Shopify ecosystems.
