How Brass-SEO Automates Your GEO Strategy
Generative Engine Optimization requires auditing your pages against specific citability factors -- the structural traits that make AI systems more likely to extract, attribute, and cite your content. Doing this manually is slow. Brass-SEO automates the full workflow: identify target pages, audit citability, track AI referral traffic, prioritize fixes, and re-audit after changes. For a full explanation of what GEO is and why it matters, see the Generative Engine Optimization guide.

The GEO Problem Brass-SEO Solves
Manual GEO auditing does not scale. Each page needs to be checked against ten citability factors, and doing this for 50 or more pages takes hours of focused work.
The 10-factor citability framework covers answer capsules, link-free capsules, original data, information gain, brand intent clarity, FAQ sections, content front-loading, expert quotes, heading hierarchy, and scope clarity (bounded, quote-safe claims). Each factor has specific criteria. Answer capsules need to be self-contained, 120-150 characters, placed immediately after H2 headings. Brand intent needs a clear positioning statement in the first 30% of the page. Original data needs proprietary numbers, not recycled industry statistics.
Checking one page against all ten factors takes 15-20 minutes if you know what you are looking for. For a site with 50 pages, that is over 16 hours of work before you even start making changes. And then you need to re-audit after making fixes.
Brass-SEO automates this in seconds. The AI crawls the page, evaluates all ten factors, scores each one, cross-references your Google Search Console rankings and GA4 referral data, and returns prioritized recommendations. What takes 15-20 minutes manually takes less than 30 seconds with the tool.
Step 1: Identify Your GEO-Ready Pages
Your highest-GEO-potential pages are the ones that already rank well in Google but receive no AI referral traffic.
Use the Brass-SEO Full Analysis button on the Brass-SEO dashboard to see your top pages by traffic from Google Search Console. Look for pages with strong impressions and clicks in traditional search. These pages have already proven they are relevant for their target queries -- Google thinks so. The question is whether AI systems think so too.
Next, check whether those pages are getting AI referral traffic. The AI Traffic button filters your GA4 data specifically for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and other AI platforms. Pages that rank on Google's first page but show zero AI referral traffic are your highest-priority GEO targets. Research shows 62% of brands on Google's page one appear in ChatGPT answers -- if your page is in that other 38%, it likely has a citability problem that a structural audit can identify.
You can also ask Brass-SEO directly in the chat: "Which of my top pages get no AI traffic?" The AI cross-references your GSC and GA4 data to find exactly these gaps.
Step 2: Run the AI Citability Audit
The AI Citability audit evaluates a specific page against all ten citability factors and returns a scored assessment with prioritized fixes.
Click the Brass-SEO AI Citability button on your dashboard, or type "audit this page for AI citability" in the chat and provide the URL you want to evaluate. Brass-SEO crawls the page, parses its structure, and checks each factor.
Here is what the report shows:
Per-factor scoring. Each of the ten factors gets a clear assessment. The audit checks whether your H2 headings have answer capsules, whether those capsules are free of outbound links, whether the page contains original data, whether the brand intent is clear, whether a FAQ section exists, whether key answers appear in the first 30% of text, whether expert quotes and citations are present, whether the heading hierarchy is clean, whether the page offers information gain, and whether claims are scoped and quote-safe (scope clarity).
Overall assessment. A summary of how citable the page is, based on the combination of factors present.
Prioritized recommendations. The audit does not just tell you what is missing -- it tells you what to fix first. Answer capsules are typically the highest-impact fix because 72.4% of blog posts cited by ChatGPT use them. FAQ sections are usually second. The recommendations are ordered by expected impact on citability.
Specific rewrite suggestions. For factors like answer capsules and brand intent, the audit provides concrete suggestions for what to change, based on the actual content of the page.
This is not a metadata check. The AI crawls and reads the full page content, evaluating structure and substance.
Step 3: Check Your AI Referral Traffic
GA4 referral tracking shows traffic from AI platforms, giving you a baseline measurement before you make changes.
Ask Brass-SEO "show me AI referral traffic" or use the Brass-SEO AI Traffic button. The tool queries your GA4 data for sessions referred from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and other AI sources. This data tells you which pages are already being cited by AI systems and driving clicks.
This baseline matters because GEO changes take time to show up in traffic data. You need to know where you started before you can measure improvement. Record your current AI referral numbers -- total sessions, which pages receive AI traffic, and which AI platforms are referring visitors.
For the full tracking methodology, including what GA4 can and cannot measure, see Part 2: How to Track Whether AI Is Citing You. The key limitation to understand: GA4 tracks referral clicks, not citations. An AI system can cite your content without linking to it, and those citations will not appear in your referral data.
Step 4: Make the Fixes
The most common fixes from citability audits are structural changes that take 10-30 minutes per page.
Here are the changes that appear most frequently in audit recommendations, ordered by typical impact:
Add answer capsules. Write a self-contained sentence of 120-150 characters immediately after each H2 heading. This sentence should directly answer the question the heading implies, without links or qualifiers. Part 1 of the LLM Visibility series covers the technique in detail with before-and-after examples.
Remove outbound links from key answer passages. If your capsule or the first sentence after a heading contains a link, move the link to a later sentence. Research shows 91% of cited passages contain no outbound links in the capsule text. The link itself is not the problem -- its placement within the extractable answer is.
Add original data or statistics where possible. Proprietary numbers that only you can provide give AI systems a reason to cite you specifically. Your own test results, benchmarks, customer outcomes, or survey data all qualify. If you do not have original data, this factor can be skipped -- do not fabricate statistics.
Include expert quotes with attribution. The Princeton GEO study found expert quotations improved AI visibility by up to 41% -- the single largest effect of any optimization technique tested. When you make a claim, back it up with a quote from a recognized authority. Name the source.
Add a FAQ section at the bottom. Use the exact heading ## Frequently Asked Questions for schema compatibility. Write 3-5 questions using the phrasing your audience actually uses. Q&A is the highest-cited content format in AI responses.
Use brand name instead of "we" and "our" in key passages. If a capsule says "we offer 24/7 support," an LLM cannot tell who "we" is. If it says "Acme Corp offers 24/7 support," the attribution is clear and citable.
Step 5: Re-Audit After Changes
After making fixes, re-run the citability audit to verify your changes improved the page's score.
Go back to the Brass-SEO AI Citability button and audit the same URL. Compare the before-and-after results. Factors that previously flagged as missing should now pass. If a factor still flags, the audit will explain what is still missing -- sometimes the capsule is too long, the brand statement is buried too deep, or the FAQ questions are too generic.
For AI referral traffic changes, the timeline depends on the platform:
- Perplexity searches the live web. Changes can appear in Perplexity citations within days.
- Google AI Overviews reflect Google's index. Changes typically appear within 1-4 weeks after Google recrawls your page.
- ChatGPT uses both live browsing and training data. Browsing-based citations can appear quickly, but training data updates happen on a longer cycle.
Check your AI referral traffic in GA4 after 2-4 weeks. This creates a feedback loop: audit, fix, re-audit, measure traffic. Part 4 of the LLM Visibility series documents a real example of this process -- a page ranking on Google's first page with zero AI citations, audited, fixed in 30 minutes, and re-audited.
Over time, this loop becomes your ongoing GEO practice. Pages that matter get audited regularly. Pages that do not convert or rank can be deprioritized.
What GEO Data Brass-SEO Does Not Cover
Brass-SEO improves your chances of being cited by AI systems, but it cannot guarantee citations.
Here are the honest limitations:
No guarantee of AI citations. The citability audit identifies structural improvements based on published research. Implementing these changes makes your content more citable -- meaning easier for AI systems to extract and attribute. But no tool can guarantee that a specific AI platform will cite a specific page. Citation decisions are made by AI models, not by you or by any optimization tool.
No direct tracking of ChatGPT training data inclusion. GA4 tracks referral clicks from chatgpt.com when ChatGPT links to your page. It cannot tell you whether your content was included in ChatGPT's training data or is being used in responses that do not link back to you.
No control over which AI platform cites you. You can optimize structure, but you cannot force Perplexity to cite your page over a competitor's, or make Google AI Overviews pull from your content instead of someone else's.
AI referral tracking depends on GA4 attribution. Not all AI traffic is trackable. If an AI system recommends your brand name without linking, the resulting direct visit will not show up as AI referral traffic in GA4. The referral data captures clicks from AI platforms, not the full influence of AI citations.
Citability audit is structural analysis, not a prediction engine. The audit tells you what is structurally strong and what is missing based on factors correlated with citation. It does not predict a probability of being cited.
These limitations apply to all GEO tools and approaches, not just Brass-SEO. The value of the tool is in automating the audit, surfacing the data, and saving you the hours of manual work.
The $25/Month GEO Stack
A complete GEO workflow requires three things: search performance data, AI referral tracking, and an automated citability audit. Here is the full stack.
Google Search Console (free). GSC provides your search performance baseline -- which pages rank, for which queries, at which positions. This is how you identify pages with GEO potential: high-ranking pages that AI systems should be citing but are not. GSC is required for Brass-SEO to function.
Google Analytics 4 (free). GA4 provides AI referral traffic tracking -- sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and other AI platforms. This is how you measure whether GEO changes are working. GA4 is required for Brass-SEO to function.
Brass-SEO ($25/month, 3-day free trial). Brass-SEO connects to both GSC and GA4 and adds the layer that makes GEO practical: automated citability audits, cross-referenced data analysis, and conversational AI that answers your questions about your site's performance. Both Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 are required -- set up takes about 2 minutes.
The total cost is $25/month. GSC and GA4 are free. There are no additional tools required for a functional GEO workflow.

GEO Glossary
This post uses several terms that the industry has not fully standardized. Here is a quick reference.
| Term | Full Name | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| GEO | Generative Engine Optimization | Optimizing content so generative AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) cite it. Coined by Princeton researchers (Aggarwal et al., 2024). |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimization | Broader term that includes GEO plus traditional answer features like featured snippets and Google AI Overviews. |
| LLM Visibility | Large Language Model Visibility | Whether your content appears in LLM-generated responses. Used interchangeably with GEO in practitioner contexts. |
| AI Citability | — | How likely a page is to be cited by AI systems, based on structural and content factors. What Brass-SEO audits measure. |
| AI Overviews | Google AI Overviews | AI-generated answer summaries shown at the top of Google search results. Draws from Google's existing search index. |
| Answer Capsule | — | A self-contained explanation (1-2 sentences) placed immediately after a heading. The most common structural trait of AI-cited content (72.4%, Gnuse research). |
| AI Search | — | Umbrella term for any search experience powered by AI, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude. |
| Zero-Click Search | — | A search where the user gets their answer directly in the results without clicking through to a website. AI Overviews are a type of zero-click search. |
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I run citability audits?
After every significant content update. For your top-performing pages, run a monthly audit even if you have not made changes -- the audit is instant, so there is no time cost to re-running it. The goal is to catch regressions (accidental removal of capsules, broken heading hierarchy) before they affect your AI referral traffic.
Does Brass-SEO audit competitor pages?
No. Brass-SEO audits pages on the domain you have connected via Google Search Console. For competitor analysis, you would need to manually check their pages against the 10-factor framework.
Can Brass-SEO tell me if AI is citing my site?
Brass-SEO shows AI referral traffic from GA4, which captures clicks from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and other AI platforms. It cannot tell you about citations that do not result in clicks. For a full breakdown of what is and is not trackable, see Part 2: How to Track Whether AI Is Citing You.
What if my pages are blocked by a firewall?
Brass-SEO uses a secondary extraction service as a fallback when direct page access is blocked by a WAF or bot protection. If both the direct fetch and fallback fail, the AI explains the issue and offers to analyze your page using GSC and GA4 data instead. For instructions on allowlisting the Brass-SEO crawler, see /allow-bot.
