GEO FAQ: 25 Questions About AI Search

Generative Engine Optimization is still new enough that most people have more questions than answers. This post collects the twenty-five questions we hear most often and answers each one directly, drawing on published research, platform behavior, and what we have learned building AI citability auditing into Brass-SEO.

Every answer uses the answer capsule technique: the first sentence directly addresses the question, followed by supporting context. If you want the full framework instead of a FAQ, see the GEO guide. If you want the research behind these answers, see what the studies found.

Quick Navigation

Understanding GEO

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of optimizing web content so that AI systems are more likely to cite it when generating answers. The term was coined by Princeton researchers (Aggarwal et al., 2024) in the first academic paper to formally study how content modifications affect AI citation rates. Where traditional SEO focuses on ranking in a list of search results, GEO focuses on being referenced inside AI-generated responses from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

For a deeper look at the research, see our GEO research overview.

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is the broader practice of optimizing content for any system that delivers direct answers, including featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and AI-generated responses. GEO is a subset of AEO focused specifically on generative AI systems. AEO has existed since Google introduced featured snippets, and many of its techniques — clear headings, direct answers, structured formatting — carry directly into GEO.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

GEO focuses specifically on generative AI citation, while AEO covers all answer-delivery systems including traditional search features. The practical techniques overlap substantially: both reward content that provides clear, extractable answers after question-oriented headings. The key difference is that GEO accounts for how language models process and select text, which introduces factors like answer capsules and link-free formatting that matter less for featured snippets.

Is GEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO is about ranking in search engine results pages. GEO is about getting cited inside AI-generated responses. However, the two disciplines share significant overlap. Research from Authoritas found approximately 62% overlap between pages that rank organically and pages cited in AI Overviews, which means strong traditional SEO is the foundation that GEO builds on. You do not abandon SEO to do GEO — you add GEO techniques on top of existing SEO work.

When did GEO start?

GEO as a named discipline started with the Princeton paper published in 2024. But the underlying practice is older than the name. Content structured for featured snippets — direct answers after question headings, clear definitions, structured data — was always proto-GEO. What changed is that generative AI systems introduced new citation behaviors that traditional featured-snippet optimization does not fully address, which is why GEO emerged as a distinct discipline.

GEO and Your Business

Do I need GEO?

If your customers use AI tools to research purchases, compare services, or answer questions your business can solve, then yes. AI search usage is growing across every demographic, and the businesses whose content gets cited in AI responses gain a traffic channel that did not exist two years ago. The question is not whether AI search will matter to your industry but when.

For strategies on earning AI citations, see our guide on getting cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Is GEO only for big companies?

No. The Princeton study found that content modifications alone drove 30-40% improvements in AI citation rates, independent of domain authority or brand size. Small businesses with well-structured, factual content can be cited over larger competitors whose pages lack answer capsules, original data, or clear formatting. GEO rewards content quality and structure, which any business can control.

How much does GEO cost?

The content work itself is free — restructuring your existing pages to add answer capsules, remove links from key passages, and include original data costs nothing but time. Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 are free tools that provide the data you need to track results. Brass-SEO ($25/month) automates the citability auditing process so you do not have to check every page manually. No expensive enterprise tools are required.

Can I do GEO myself?

Yes. You can manually audit any page against the ten citability factors described in Part 3 of our LLM Visibility series: answer capsules, link-free capsules, original data, information gain, brand intent, FAQ sections, content front-loading, expert quotes and citations, heading hierarchy, and scope clarity (bounded, quote-safe claims). Tools like Brass-SEO automate this process, but the audit criteria are transparent and anyone can apply them by hand.

How long until I see GEO results?

It depends on the platform. Perplexity searches the web in real time, so structural improvements can be reflected in citations almost immediately. Google AI Overviews draw from the search index, so changes appear within days to weeks as Google recrawls your pages. ChatGPT's training data updates on a longer cycle, so changes to training-data citations can take months. Plan for weeks to months before you can measure a clear trend in AI referral traffic.

GEO Techniques

What are answer capsules?

Answer capsules are self-contained explanations of one to two sentences placed immediately after a heading, directly answering the question the heading implies. Research from Adam Gnuse found that 72.4% of blog posts cited by ChatGPT contain answer capsules. They work because language models can extract a complete, attributable statement without needing to process the surrounding paragraphs. Every answer in this FAQ is written as an answer capsule.

For the full research, see Part 1 of the LLM Visibility series.

What are the most important GEO factors?

The three highest-impact factors supported by evidence are answer capsules, link-free formatting, and original data. The Princeton study found that adding expert quotations improved citation rates by up to 41%. A complete audit checks all ten factors, but if you are prioritizing, start with answer capsules (most correlated with ChatGPT citations), then make those capsules free of links, then add original data or proprietary findings to your content.

Does Schema markup help with GEO?

Schema markup helps search engines understand your page structure, and FAQ schema in particular maps well to the question-answer patterns that AI systems look for. There is no published evidence that Schema markup directly increases AI citation rates, but it supports the structural clarity that GEO depends on. Adding FAQ, HowTo, and Article schema is a low-effort investment that reinforces your content's machine readability.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed machine-readable file that websites can publish to provide AI systems with a structured summary of their content, similar to how robots.txt communicates with search crawlers. It is an emerging standard with limited evidence of impact so far. Adding one is a low-effort step, but it should not be prioritized over higher-impact work like adding answer capsules or restructuring content for citability.

How is GEO content different from SEO content?

GEO content shares the same quality foundation as SEO content — accurate, well-structured, authoritative — but adds specific structural requirements. GEO content needs extractable passages that work as standalone citations, self-contained answers that do not depend on surrounding context, original data or proprietary findings, and key passages free of links that would signal the real answer lives elsewhere. A page can be optimized for both SEO and GEO simultaneously.

AI Platforms and Citations

Which AI platforms cite websites?

The major platforms that cite web sources are ChatGPT (when browsing), Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude (when using search). Perplexity is the most citation-heavy, typically referencing five to ten sources per response with inline numbered links. Each platform has different citation behaviors, which means a page optimized for one platform may perform differently on another.

For a full breakdown of where people search besides Google, see our platform comparison guide.

How does ChatGPT choose what to cite?

ChatGPT draws from two sources: its training data and real-time web browsing. When browsing, it favors pages with extractable passages and original data that directly answer the user's question. The research shows that pages with answer capsules and link-free formatting are cited more frequently. ChatGPT does not publish its source selection criteria, but the observable patterns align closely with the content traits identified in Gnuse's study.

How does Perplexity choose what to cite?

Perplexity searches the web in real time for every query and cites five to ten sources per response. It favors pages that rank well in traditional search (because it uses search engines as its discovery layer) combined with content that contains quotable, specific statements. Because Perplexity searches live, content improvements can be reflected in citations faster than on any other platform.

How do Google AI Overviews choose what to cite?

Google AI Overviews draw from Google's existing search index, making them the AI feature most closely connected to traditional SEO. Research from Authoritas found 62% overlap between pages that rank organically and pages cited in AI Overviews. If your page already ranks on page one for a query, it is a strong candidate for AI Overview citation. If it does not rank, it is unlikely to appear in the AI Overview either.

Can I control whether AI cites me?

Not directly. No platform offers a way to guarantee citation, and no payment or setting forces an AI system to reference your page. But you can increase the probability by optimizing across the ten citability factors. Think of GEO the same way you think of SEO: you cannot force a ranking, but you can do the work that makes ranking more likely. The same principle applies to AI citations.

Measuring GEO

How do I track AI referral traffic?

The most direct method is filtering your GA4 Traffic Acquisition report by known AI referral domains: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and others. This shows you sessions, pages visited, and engagement metrics for visitors who arrived from AI tools.

For a full setup walkthrough, see Part 2 of our LLM Visibility series, which covers both GA4 configuration and what the numbers mean.

What metrics should I track for GEO?

The four key metrics are AI referral sessions (volume from AI platforms), AI referral landing pages (which pages get cited), citability audit scores (structural readiness), and brand mention frequency (how often AI mentions your brand unprompted). AI referral sessions and landing pages come from GA4. Citability scores come from auditing your pages against the ten factors. Brand mentions require manual checking in AI tools.

How do I know if GEO is working?

Three signals tell you GEO is working: rising AI referral traffic in your GA4 reports, your pages appearing when you manually check relevant queries in ChatGPT and Perplexity, and improving citability scores on your key pages. Give it weeks to months for trends to become visible. A single data point is not meaningful — look for directional movement over time, especially in AI referral sessions from your traffic acquisition reports.

Is there a GEO equivalent of Google Search Console?

No centralized dashboard for AI citations exists yet. No platform currently offers a "here are all the queries where we cited your website" report. The best approach available today combines GA4 referral tracking for quantitative data, manual citation checks in AI tools for qualitative data, and citability audits for structural readiness. This gap is one of the reasons GEO measurement is harder than SEO measurement.

How does Brass-SEO help with GEO?

The Brass-SEO AI Citability button automates the ten-factor citability audit for any page on your site, telling you exactly what to fix and in what order. The Brass-SEO Full Analysis report shows your AI referral traffic alongside traditional SEO metrics so you can track both channels in one place.
