What Brass-SEO Is (and What It Is Not)

Every SEO tool makes the same promise: better rankings, more traffic, actionable insights. The differences are in what each tool actually does to deliver on that promise, and what it deliberately leaves out. This post is our attempt to be specific about both.

Brass-SEO is an AI-powered SEO analysis tool that connects to your Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 accounts, cross-references the data, and answers your questions in plain English. It costs $25/month with a 3-day free trial. Both GSC and GA4 are required.

That single paragraph tells you most of what you need to know. The rest of this post explains why we built it this way, how it compares to tools you may be evaluating, and what makes our AI Citability audit something no other SEO tool offers.

Quick Navigation

What Brass-SEO Is

Brass-SEO is an AI that reads your Google data and tells you what it means. You ask questions in plain English and get answers with specific recommendations.

Here is the full list of what Brass-SEO does:

  • Conversational AI interface — Ask "How is my traffic this month?" instead of reading dashboards
  • GSC + GA4 cross-referencing — Combines search performance data with user behavior data automatically
  • Page audits — Analyzes individual pages for SEO issues (titles, meta descriptions, headings, content structure)
  • AI Citability audits — Evaluates pages against ten research-backed factors that determine whether AI systems like ChatGPT and Perplexity will cite your content
  • Indexing checks — Verifies whether Google has indexed your pages via the URL Inspection API
  • Keyword opportunity analysis — Finds striking-distance keywords where you are close to page one
  • Traffic trend analysis — Shows week-over-week and month-over-month changes with explanations
  • Content ideas — Suggests blog topics based on what your audience is already searching for
  • AI referral traffic tracking — Shows which pages get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini

Setup takes about 2 minutes. Connect your Google accounts, start asking questions.

What Brass-SEO Is Not

Brass-SEO deliberately excludes backlink tracking, competitive keyword research, and large-scale site crawling to keep its price at $25/month instead of $129-500/month. It is a different category of tool from enterprise SEO platforms.

Brass-SEO does not do:

  • Backlink tracking or analysis — We do not crawl the web or maintain a link index. If you need to know who links to your competitors, tools like Ahrefs are built for that.
  • Competitive keyword research — We show you the keywords your site ranks for (from GSC). We cannot show you keywords your competitors rank for. Semrush and Ahrefs maintain their own keyword databases for this.
  • Large-scale site crawling — We audit individual pages, not thousands at once. Screaming Frog and Sitebulb are purpose-built for crawling large sites.
  • PPC or paid search management — We focus on organic search only.
  • Social media analytics — We focus on search performance.
  • Rank tracking dashboards — We show your GSC position data, but we do not offer dedicated daily rank tracking charts the way Semrush, Ahrefs, or SE Ranking do.

These are deliberate choices, not missing features. Each capability we skipped would require building and maintaining expensive infrastructure — web crawlers, link indexes, keyword databases — that would push our price toward $100-500/month. We decided the trade-off was not worth it for our customers.

How We Compare on Price

Brass-SEO costs $25/month, placing it in the $29-39 entry-level bracket alongside Ubersuggest, Moz, and SE Ranking — but with a fundamentally different approach focused on AI data interpretation rather than keyword databases and crawlers.

Pricing as of early 2026 (check each tool's website for current pricing):

Tool Entry Plan What You Get
Brass-SEO $25/month AI data interpreter, page audits, AI Citability audits, indexing checks
Ubersuggest ~$29/month Basic keyword research, site audit
Moz ~$49/month Domain authority, keyword research, link analysis
SE Ranking ~$44/month Rank tracking, site audit, keyword research
Ahrefs $129/month Backlink index, keyword research, site audit, rank tracking
Semrush $139.95/month Full platform: keywords, backlinks, PPC, content, social
Semrush Guru $249.95/month Everything in Pro plus content marketing tools

Brass-SEO sits in the $29-39 range alongside tools like Ubersuggest, Moz, and SE Ranking. But the overlap in what we do is minimal. Those tools are traditional SEO platforms with keyword databases and crawlers. Brass-SEO is a conversational AI that interprets your existing Google data and audits your content for AI search readiness.

The question is not which tool costs less. It is which tool does the job you actually need done.

The Data Source Difference

Most SEO tools build their own data by crawling the web. Brass-SEO does not crawl the web. It connects to the data Google already collects about your website.

This matters because the data is fundamentally different:

Third-Party Tools Brass-SEO
Keywords Estimated search volume from their own crawl Your actual impressions and clicks from GSC
Traffic Estimated monthly visitors Your actual sessions and users from GA4
Rankings Sampled position checks Your real average position from GSC
Click-through rates Not available Your actual CTR per query from GSC

Third-party estimates are useful for competitive research — seeing data about sites you do not own. But for understanding your own site, first-party Google data is more accurate. It is not estimated. It is what actually happened.

Brass-SEO's value is in making that first-party data understandable. You should not need to learn what "CTR" means or how to cross-reference a GSC query report with a GA4 landing page report. You should be able to ask "Which pages are getting impressions but not clicks?" and get a list with specific fix suggestions.

AI Citability: The Feature No Other Tool Has

Brass-SEO includes an AI Citability audit that evaluates any page against ten research-backed factors that determine whether AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini will cite it. No other SEO tool on the market offers this.

This is not a generic "AI optimization" checkbox. It is a structured audit based on published research:

  • Adam Gnuse's study of 15 domains and 7,500 ChatGPT referral sessions identified the content traits that get cited most — including answer capsules (present in 72.4% of cited posts) and original data (present in 52.2%).
  • Princeton's GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) study tested nine optimization methods and found that adding expert quotations improved AI visibility by up to 41%.
  • Paul DeMott's research established practical frameworks for measuring LLM visibility over time.

Semrush does not audit your pages for AI citability. Ahrefs does not. Moz does not. SE Ranking does not. This is a gap in the market, and we built the tool to fill it.

For the full technical breakdown, see our four-part series: Answer Capsules, Tracking AI Citations, Auditing for AI Citability, and Case Study.

What an AI Citability Report Looks Like

The Brass-SEO AI Citability button on your dashboard runs a full audit when you paste a URL. Here is what it checks:

The Ten Factors:

  1. Answer capsules — Does each H2 heading have a self-contained opening sentence (120-150 characters) that an LLM could quote standalone? Research shows 72.4% of ChatGPT-cited blog posts use this pattern.

  2. Link-free capsules — Are those opening sentences free of links? 91% of cited capsules contain no links. Links signal "the answer is elsewhere."

  3. Original data — Does the page contain proprietary statistics, benchmarks, or unique findings that only your site can provide? Present in 52.2% of cited posts.

  4. Information gain — Does this page say something an LLM cannot assemble from other sources?

  5. Brand intent clarity — Is there a clear statement of who you are and what you do in the first 30% of the content?

  6. FAQ section — Is there a dedicated Q&A section? Q&A is the highest-cited content format for LLMs.

  7. Content front-loading — Are key answers in the first 30% of the text? Research shows 44% of all LLM citations come from this zone.

  8. Expert quotes and citations — Does the content cite sources or quote authorities? This is the highest-impact optimization per Princeton's research (+41% visibility).

  9. Heading hierarchy — Is the H1, H2, H3 structure clean and logical?

  10. Scope clarity — Are the page's claims bounded and quote-safe, or do unscoped superlatives make them risky to cite? An AI cites what it can quote without being wrong, so overclaims get skipped and scoped claims get cited.

The report does not just score these factors. It gives you specific rewrites for weak answer capsules, tells you which H2 headings need work, and checks whether the page is already receiving AI referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Gemini through your GA4 data.

Why AI Citability Matters Now

AI search is not replacing Google. It is adding a second layer of discovery. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, those systems choose which sources to cite. If your content is not structured to be cited, you are invisible in that layer.

The data supports this: 62% of brands that appear on Google's page one also appear in ChatGPT answers. But 38% do not. The difference is not authority or backlinks — it is content structure. Pages with clear answer capsules, FAQ sections, and explicit brand positioning get cited. Pages without them get skipped, even if they rank well on Google.

This is why we built AI Citability into Brass-SEO. Traditional SEO tools were built before AI search existed. Their audits check for title tags, meta descriptions, broken links, and page speed — all still important, but none of them address whether your content will be cited by ChatGPT. We check all the traditional factors too, but we also check the ten factors that determine AI visibility.

Who Should Use Brass-SEO

Brass-SEO is designed for business owners who want plain-English interpretations of their Google Search Console and GA4 data without learning complex dashboards or paying $129-500/month for enterprise features they will never use.

Brass-SEO is built for you if:

  • You are a business owner, not an SEO professional
  • You have GSC and GA4 but do not understand the dashboards
  • You want answers in plain English, not more data to interpret
  • You care about showing up in AI search results, not just Google
  • You want to know what to fix next, with specific instructions
  • Your budget is $25/month, not $129-500/month
  • You do not need competitive keyword research or backlink tracking
  • You prefer asking questions over navigating complex interfaces

If this describes you, start your free trial. Setup takes about 2 minutes.

Who Should Use Something Else

Users who need backlink analysis, competitive keyword research, or large-scale site crawling should choose enterprise tools like Ahrefs ($129/month) or Semrush ($139.95/month) that are built for those workflows.

Choose Ahrefs if:

  • Link building is central to your SEO strategy
  • You need to analyze competitors' backlink profiles
  • You want the largest backlink index available

Choose Semrush if:

  • You are an agency managing multiple client sites
  • You need competitive keyword research at scale
  • You run both SEO and PPC campaigns
  • You want an all-in-one marketing platform

Choose Screaming Frog or Sitebulb if:

  • You need to crawl thousands of pages for technical issues
  • Your site has complex architecture that requires deep technical auditing

Choose SE Ranking or AccuRanker if:

  • Daily rank tracking is your primary use case
  • You need historical position data with visual charts

Use free GSC + GA4 directly if:

  • You are comfortable reading dashboards yourself
  • You do not need interpretation or recommendations
  • Your budget is $0

These are good tools. They solve problems Brass-SEO does not solve. If competitive intelligence, backlink analysis, or large-scale auditing is your priority, one of them is a better fit. We built Brass-SEO for the business owner who needs their own data explained — with the added ability to audit their content for AI search readiness, which none of these tools offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Brass-SEO different from Semrush and Ahrefs?

Brass-SEO uses your actual Google data (GSC + GA4) and interprets it through conversational AI. Semrush and Ahrefs maintain their own web crawlers and keyword databases, giving you estimated data about any website. Brass-SEO is built for understanding your own site. Semrush and Ahrefs are built for competitive research and professional SEO workflows. Brass-SEO also includes an AI Citability audit that evaluates your content for AI search readiness — a capability neither Semrush nor Ahrefs offers.

No. Brass-SEO does not crawl the web or maintain a backlink index. If backlink analysis is critical to your SEO strategy, use Ahrefs or Semrush. For most small business websites without active link-building campaigns, backlink data is not the highest-priority information. Your time is usually better spent on content quality, indexing, and keyword optimization.

What is an AI Citability audit?

An AI Citability audit evaluates whether a page is structured so that AI systems like ChatGPT and Perplexity will cite it in their responses. It checks ten factors including answer capsules, original data, FAQ sections, expert citations, scope clarity, and brand intent clarity. Each factor is backed by published research. The audit provides specific rewrite suggestions, not just scores. See the full explanation.

Why does AI Citability matter for my business?

AI search engines are becoming a significant discovery channel. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a question related to your business, your content either gets cited or it does not. The difference is structural — pages with clear answer capsules and FAQ sections get cited more than pages without them, regardless of domain authority. Brass-SEO checks whether your pages are structured for citation and tells you what to fix.

Is $25/month worth it if I can use GSC and GA4 for free?

GSC and GA4 are powerful, and they are free. What they lack is interpretation. They show you data — impressions, clicks, sessions, bounce rates — but they do not tell you what the data means or what to do about it. Brass-SEO adds the interpretation layer: cross-referencing GSC and GA4 data, identifying opportunities, diagnosing problems, and giving you specific actions. It also adds AI Citability auditing, which GSC and GA4 do not offer at all. For more on this, see Free SEO Tools vs Paid: Where the Line Is.

Can I use Brass-SEO alongside other SEO tools?

Yes. Brass-SEO has minimal overlap with traditional SEO platforms because it solves a different problem. You could use Ahrefs for backlink research and Brass-SEO for day-to-day site monitoring and AI Citability auditing. In practice, most small businesses do not need both — but they are compatible if you do.

How is the data different from what Semrush shows?

Semrush estimates your traffic and keyword data based on its own web crawl. Brass-SEO shows your actual data from Google's APIs — real impressions, real clicks, real sessions. For understanding your own site's performance, first-party data is more accurate. For researching competitors or discovering keywords you do not rank for yet, Semrush's estimates are more useful.

Does Brass-SEO work for e-commerce sites?

Yes. Brass-SEO can analyze any website connected through GSC and GA4. It works well for identifying which product pages get search impressions but no clicks, which category pages have high bounce rates, and which keywords drive traffic to the wrong landing pages. For large e-commerce sites with thousands of product pages needing bulk technical auditing, you may also want a dedicated crawler like Screaming Frog alongside Brass-SEO.
